Rachel,
I'd like to start by thanking you for the great facilitation job you did for us all at openvolcano10.

I have one observation, but few suggestions as to possible solutions:

As both a session leader and a participant I would have felt even more positive about the day with a little feedback on each session. Agile North 2008 had an impromptu "awards" session at the close (or was it at the end of each session?) where sessions (not specifically presenters) were commented-on and voted-on by the attendees. That worked for me.

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks, Bob. Interesting idea! How do you envisage feedback collection would work? Could it be as simple as the session convenor asking participants for feedback at the end of the session? Or were you envisaging some data collection like the red/yello/green slips collected on exit? One issue with both of these solutions is that open space encourages people to bumblebee between sessions so they might have feedback that doesn't get back to the session host. Ideas?

I like the way appreciations are done at xpday benelux. There a facilitator looks at all sessions, and asks' participants to say something about that session. You hear what people liked, what they learned, what puzzles them, what they missed etc...
of course for that you need to know about all the sessions. In an open space environment some of the "sessions" might be started without official announcement and thus be less visible.
In the same order I like the OOMP's at the beginning of the xp benelux
Official One minute presentation, where presentors "advertise" their sessions.

A couple of comments based on experiencing Harrison Owen facilitate the Open Space at the Orlando Scrum Gathering this year.

1. Don't have a schedule on the wall, but instead have a set up post its for each slot (location & time). Conveners pick a post-it and add it to their proposal, and then stick the proposal to the wall. Makes the schedule feel even more informal, and more of a marketplace.

2. Have a News Wall where conveners post notes from their sessions for people for review over the course of the day. If the technology is available, the news could be printed copies of typed notes, so the notes are naturally kept for posterity.

Thanks, Karl! Great suggestions for Open Space facilitation. I would love to see Harrison Owen in action.

I also spotted a tweet from Jean Tabaka that at the Lean SSC conference, which has Open Space integrated into the program, they are providing free beer to lure people into propose Open Space sessions.

Wow! Great tips and what a great site!

I spent half of my adult life managing my company or other people's companies... I wish I bumped into your blog back then... [now I work as a solo-professional; however, I can still use many of your tips with my clients, as well as I can refer them to your site]

Keep up the great posts :)
